The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) has launched its 2017 Summer season. Between May and August the Manchester conservatoire and venue hosts everything from classical music, Big Band and jazz right through to a student collaboration with New Order as part of Manchester International Festival.

Classical highlights include Bach’s masterpiece St John Passion performed by the RNCM Chamber Orchestra, plus the college’s Symphony Orchestra tackling Tchaikovsky’s monumental Sixth at The Bridgewater Hall and the continuation of its family-friendly Young Explorers series, featuring popular works by Stravinsky, Bernstein and Copland.

American bassist Jaco Pastorius is the subject of the RNCM’s Summer Big Band show, while Joshua Redman’s all-star contemporary jazz group, the Still Dreaming quartet, pays a much-anticipated visit.

This traditional boozer, surrounded by imposing flats and university buildings, was taken over by Trof (of the Deaf Institute fame). The Sally, as the regulars call it, hosts an energetic, arty crowd – and its recently expanded outside area is another good reason to visit.
