Opera North: Alcina at The Lowry
Creative TouristTaking place on a magical island belonging to a beautiful but dangerous enchantress who seduces every man that lands there, Alcina is a bewitching tale of deception, love and loss.
Set on Alcina’s mysterious island. A place where all men who set foot there fall under her spell; a barren wasteland populated by her discarded lovers who she has turned into animals, rocks and trees. However, when the handsome knight Ruggiero appears, Alcina experiences true love for the first time. And when Ruggiero’s fiancée arrives on a mission to rescue him, Alcina’s magic is tested to breaking point…
Based on part of a fantastical 1532 Italian epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto called Orlando furioso, the opera features one of Handel’s most famous arias: the beautiful ‘Verdi prati’.
In a terrific triple bill, Opera North also bring Rigoletto and Carmen to The Lowry this March.
