We are lucky to be spoilt for choice when it comes to fresh, delicious and independent food choices in the centre of Manchester. Nowhere is this presence felt more than in the Northern Quarter. Join John Ryan, a charismatic and engaging tour guide, on this taster walk as you eat your way through the back streets learning about the local history and culture as you go. Across a leisurely lunch you will try five different taster plates. Expect a wide range of cultures, cuisines and establishments, each with a strong connection to Manchester and their surrounding area, whether that be learning about the origin of infamous curry house This and That’s name or meeting one of the longest standing stall holders at Picadilly market.

It is definitely recommended to arrive hungry as you certainly won’t leave the tour with an empty stomach. John makes the effort to get to know the tastes of the people on his tours and tailors each walk to their particular foodie interests. What you can be certain of is the quality of the food you’ll be walking to. John is thoroughly knowledgeable when it comes to Northern Quarter independent eateries. As well as showing you some hidden gems nestled in side streets and back alleys, he is very familiar with the menus and knows exactly what to recommend. As someone who has been guiding food tours for five years as well as having led tours in the city centre for ten, he can give you a well rounded insight into the artistic and cultural heritage of the area. As you eat you’ll feel a sense of connection with the place as well as the plate. It isn’t your typical meal out.

In addition to running public tours, John offers bespoke and private food tours tailored to individuals needs. However, the Northern Quarter taster tour is an excellent way to learn a bit more about the area while enjoying that most human of activities, sharing good food and good conversation.

Tours start at 11:30 on selected Saturdays from outside the tourist information centre in Picadilly Gardens.

A busy image created using generative AI. The image depicts a man at the centre with grey hair and rosy cheeks, surrounding him are fairies that appear to be created in his own image with multiple limbs and unique bodily proportions. Around them are hundreds of vials, microscopes and dated scientific equipment.

Spring has sprung a wealth of great exhibitions in the North West, from intimate photographic shows to huge installations.

Closer, riskier, more immediate. Our small-scale theatre picks stretch from unsettling fables about nationhood to the inner workings of a mind trying to hold itself together.
