Part of Manchester Classical, the BBC Phil returns in the evening with a cinematic, jazz-tinged blockbuster: Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration, and Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
Music for beginnings and endings. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue kicks off with one of the most iconic clarinet solos ever written – a swaggering entry into a jazz-age fever dream. Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances tears through 1950s New York with full dramatic force, while Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration opens the night in a quiet room, at the edge of life itself.
