Floating art is welcoming in the lunar new year with an afternoon of traditional, mindful and expert led creativity. Join teacher Ula Fung as she guides you through the process of painting your very own Chinese lantern as we prepare to enter the year of the snake. Using traditional materials and tools you’ll be guided step by step into painting a scroll you can be proud of. Whether you’re an artist looking for a new challenge or a keen novice wanting to learn how to paint, Ula is there to help guide people no matter what level they come to the workshop at.

You’ll be using bamboo brushes, mineral paints and chinese ink to paint with. All these materials are traditionally used in Chinese art and are provided in the session. At each creative junction Ula will demonstrate how to use the materials, with accessible levels of skill involved that achieve striking results. You’ll then practise on rice paper before committing to the canvas (or lantern in this case) and bringing an imagined creation into being.

Unlike other art workshops where participants are spoon fed a predetermined design, Ula’s sessions equip people with the skills to paint for themselves. She encourages genuine creative freedom and expression where the resulting artworks end up looking brilliant because of this. As someone who has moved to Manchester from Hong-Kong, she’s a great teacher to learn Chinese traditional methods from. He own work artfully mixes influences from East Asian and Western fine art cultures making for a detailed and expressive style.

This workshop is for over sixteens and it’s recommended that you wear clothes you wouldn’t mind getting a bit of paint or ink on. At the end of the workshop you’ll be able to take your lantern home with you straight away, so be sure to bring a decent sized bag to carry it in.

It’s worth noting 92 degrees coffee in Spinningfields is located within the ‘No.1 Spinningfields’ building. (opposite M&S). A hot drink is included with the ticket price but you can also get 10% off any other food purchased on the day.
