Floating Art is taking over the House of Social this Lunar New Year. Hosting two workshops on the art of Chinese painting, Floating Art is inviting you to slow down and get creative.

The first workshop being hosted on the 15th February is focused on the art of Chinese lantern painting. You will learn the step by step process of creating your very own traditional Chinese lantern – from the inner structure of thinly-crafted wood, to the delicate paper wrapping.

Ula Fung

Your teacher, local artists and Floating Art founder, Ula Fung, will demonstrate the traditional Chinese painting techniques. Ula Fung grew up in Hong Kong with her family. The Lunar New Year festival holds special memories for Fung. When she was younger, she recalls how her and her family would gather around the table and paint beautiful works that they would then share and hang in their homes.

The typical Chinese painting techniques use a combination of bamboo brushes, sumi ink and mineral paints. Fung will be on hand to offer guidance and inspiration. The second part of the workshop is where your creativity has a chance to shine. You will be using the techniques you have learned to paint Lunar New Year-inspired motifs directly onto your lantern, which you can then take home with you.

On the 22nd February, Floating Art will be back at House of Social to host another workshop all about Chinese brush painting, specifically on rice paper. Similar techniques and equipment will be used in this class. The delicate process is once again guided by Ula Fung. And don’t worry, you will have a chance to practise a few times before moving onto your final piece. The finished product will be your very own traditional Chinese painting on a rice paper fan or scroll.

Upon arrival to each workshop, you will be welcomed by a complimentary drink before getting started. These Lunar New Year Workshops offer a chance to learn traditional techniques while sharing in a celebration shaped by personal history, cultural traditions and the honouring of heritage.
