Floating Art is taking over the House of Social to welcome the Lunar New Year. By hosting two workshops on the art of Chinese painting, Floating Art is inviting participants to slow down and get creative in the celebration.

The first workshop, Chinese Lantern Painting, is focused on the process of creating a traditional lantern from scratch. You will receive step by step instructions on how to build your lantern, from the inner structure of finely-crafted wood, to the delicate paper wrapping of the exterior.

While waiting for your lantern to dry, your teacher, local artist and Floating Art founder, Ula Fung, will be demonstrating the Chinese painting techniques. Ula Fung grew up in Hong Kong with her family. The festival for Lunar New Year holds special memories for Fung, back in Hong Kong, she and her family would gather round the table and paint beautiful works that they would then share and hang in one another’s homes.

The typical Chinese painting techniques use a combination of bamboo brushes, sumi ink and mineral paints. Fung will be on hand to offer guidance and inspiration as you come to use these techniques yourself when painting Lunar New Year-inspired motifs directly onto your lantern.

The second workshop is all about Chinese brush painting on rice paper. Similar techniques and equipment are used when painting on rice paper and on a lantern. The delicate process is once again guided by Ula Fung. The finished product will be your painting on a rice paper fan or scroll.

Upon arrival to each workshop, you will be welcomed by a complimentary drink before getting started. These Lunar New Year workshops offer a chance to learn traditional techniques while sharing in a celebration shaped by personal history, cultural traditions and collaborative creativity.
