It’s a bold statement that the first major event at Halifax’s stonking new outdoor and indoor cultural centre will be a colossal performance performed by the amateur and professional musicians of the town and region it sets to serve.

Multi-award winning jazz saxophonist and composer Andy Sheppard  is assembling sax players galore as he brings his Saxophone Massive phenomenon to The Piece Hall to launch Welcome, its reopening season.

Expect an assault on the senses and a carnival and celebratory atmosphere in this once in a lifetime chance to witness a riotous new site specific piece of live music performed by hundreds of musicians.

Andy Sheppard is renowned for breaking down boundaries and opening up the possibilities of the celebratory qualities of jazz to a wider audience, with his jazz albums unusually appearing in the UK pop charts and even touring the first jazz group to Mongolia. His Saxophone Massive project has been critically acclaimed and warmly welcomed in cities across the world in celebrating the power and astonishing effect of hundreds of saxophonists playing together.
