Journey into the tunnels of Stockport Air Raid Shelter for a fascinating insight into the lives of local people in wartime Britain. Every second Wednesday of the month at 7pm there is the opportunity to venture into this labyrinth with the Air Raid Shelter’s explorer tour. This fully guided public tour will take you to areas of the shelters that are usually closed during the daytime, including tunnels that still have the original beds in place. With a guide to lead the way and answer any questions, the explorer tours are a much more personal way to experience the Air Raid Shelter and in the evening you have the chance to see the Shelters in a new light.

Glimpse into a world we would struggle to imagine now, framed against the backdrop of impressive tunnels carved into Stockport’s natural sandstone cliffs. Tours last 90 minutes and places must be booked in advance. The evening explorer tours take children aged 11+ and adults, but during the school holidays children’s explorer tours run for ages 7+. Stockport Air Raid Shelter is a reminder of our not too distant history and from seeing how these people led their lives, it gives lets us appreciate the innovation of a previous generation.
