Cinema in the North

Tom Grieve, Cinema Editor

Coming up in Manchester this month, HOME dive into the murky world of film noir, CULTPLEX invite us for a weird weekend of Australian outback extremity, while Paraphysis Cinema delve into vintage erotic cinema at P3 Annihilation Eve. Cinematically-speaking, there’s some incredible variety on offer, and that’s before we get to the Hundreds of Beavers or a big screen showing of Billy Wilder’s The Apartment.

In Liverpool, FACT present a 35mm screening of Akira Kurosawa’s epic samurai-Shakespeare adaptation Ran, plus a huge retrospective of the films of Alfred Hitchcock. While Leeds has a bumper offer courtesy of community cinema initiative Scalarama, which sees the city’s film clubs, curators and exhibitors come together for a month-long series of rare and adventurous screenings — there’s almost one per day for the whole of September.
