Cinema in the North

Tom Grieve, Cinema Editor

At HOME this Month, there’s still chance to catch the Wes Anderson season scheduled to mark the the release of The Phoenician Scheme. Plus there’s another retrospective just announced as the films of Michael Haneke return to the big screen. A true European art house heavyweight, HOME’s selection of Haneke’s ice-cool provocations is one of the real highlights of this summer’s film events.

In Leeds, the headline announcement is the return of Cinema on the Square, featuring a quite frankly mind-bogglingly good line-up of outdoor screenings that run from iconic concert docs to Godzilla to Gaspar Noé. At Hyde Park Picture House, there’s a chance to meet local filmmakers as North by Northeast present a night of Yorkshire shorts, plus we take a look at a pair of screening from Cinema Africa!

It’s nearly time for GASP Film Festival at Cultplex too. This horror extravaganza is dedicated to celebrating diversity in genre cinema, a sideways approach that pays dividends with a fascinating programme. Just announced, we’re also delighted to hear that SCENE is coming back for a second year. An offshoot of Manchester’s Pride, this new film and television festival had a fantastic inaugural edition and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2025.
