Liverpool’s FACT, AKA the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, may only have opened in 2003 but, as an organisation, has been around for over two decades. FACT (then  Moviola) set up the biennial Video Positive festival in 1989, one of the earliest such events to celebrate what was then still an emerging art form. Since then, FACT has supported artists working with new media, commissioned countless (and occasionally seminal) artworks and, of course, opened its Wood Street building dedicated to digital media. Three arthouse cinemas screen both popular and cult films, two galleries show new work, and other spaces within the building are regularly used for digital and new media events. It also has an excellent ground-floor cafe with a vegan/veggie vibe and a first-floor bar.
