Sugar Junction

Susie Stubbs
Sugar Junction, Northern Quarter Manchester.

Situated slap bang in the middle of the Northern Quarter on Tib Street, Sugar Junction is a cosy place for afternoon tea with all the trimmings, or a sneaky scone if you happen to be in the ‘hood. Anyone who is not a fan of Cath Kidston-esque retro tweeness should back quickly out of the (tea) room, which is clearly designed to celebrate all things rose-sprigged and lacy.

Not a fan of Cath Kidston? Step away from this rose-sprigged tea room.

But Sugar Junction isn’t all about appearances: here, the owners sell their own custom loose-leaf tea blends, bake their own cakes and serve everything on vintage china. Afternoon tea includes muffins with a changing selection of fillings, a cake selection and a scone with jam and cream. Unusually, Sugar Junction also supplies gluten- and dairy-free options, too.

The retro feel makes it the perfect place to refuel after perusing the Northern Quarter’s vintage shops, and the proprietors host vintage tea parties either at their own place or elsewhere for special occasions. If they have it in when you visit, don’t miss the Chocolate and Guinness cake, which is something of a house speciality.
