In 2011 the theatre was refurbished for six months back to the 1901 interior designed by Frank Matcham, ready for the 175th birthday of the theatre. The theatre is also proud to be one of nine grade one listed theatres in the United Kingdom, an honour it truly deserves.

The Shipley Art Gallery can be found on Prince Consort Road (named after Queen Victoria’s Husband – Prince Albert) and was created in 1917 after Joseph Shipley, a local solicitor, bestowed his collection of 504 paintings to create a gallery for local people.

A stone’s throw from Newcastle’s Central Station, and around the corner from Newcastle’s Castle, is The Lit and Phil. Only a few years younger than Manchester’s, The Lit and Phil is the second oldest literary and philosophical society in the United Kingdom.

The Laing Art Gallery’s collection of classic and historical art highlights many of the successful artists who have come from the North East over the years.

The Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas is the Church of England Cathedral of Newcastle. There has been a church on the site since 1090 AD, but the church that stands there today is mostly from the 13th and 14th centuries making most of the building nearly seven hundred years old!

Based in the creative area of the Ouseburn valley, Seven Stories is built inside of a building with seven stories, but its name has a double meaning as all the stories we tell fall within seven plots: Quest; Overcoming the Monster; Rags to Riches; Voyage and Return; Tragedy; Rebirth and Comedy!

The Side Gallery can be found on a small medieval street down by Newcastle’s Quayside. The Gallery itself is inside of an old warehouse, which by itself is a fantastic building to explore. Once you have entered the gallery, you are walking into one of the most important collections of film and photography in the British Isles.

Dance City provides teaching, performances and talks all on – you guessed it – dance! Having been established for over thirty years, Dance City has helped to put the North East on the map for all types of dance from ballet to breakdance.

In an unassuming building, not far from the Discovery Museum, is one of the best up-and-coming theatres in the United Kingdom. The Alphabetti Theatre is an independent theatre, set up not-for-profit, but instead to add and develop creative talent in the North East of England.

Newcastle has been a place of innovation for centuries with inventions that have shaped the world and, in a building that started as an office for the Cooperative society, you can discover it all in one of Newcastle’s science museums – The Discovery Museum.

This grand and historic market was opened by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1896 and has been at the heart of Halifax life ever since.
