Newcastle’s Bigg Market and surrounding streets are generally known for the smashing nights out available in their clubs and bars, but on a small connecting alleyway called Old George’s yard – named for the oldest pub in Newcastle – you’ll find something quite particular, the Glamorous Owl.

The Glamorous Owl is a wonderful little independent shop surrounded by similar independent retailers. The building itself used to be a stable for the old George next door and is full of historical touches. Entering the building, you’ll feel the warmth of the building and be captivated by the colours of all the art on show.

There is a huge range of items on show, and you will be able to look through the work of these local independent artists – with over sixty represented inside. Each artist has their own specialism with the Glamorous Owl being careful to ensure there is no duplication.

The artist themselves are specialists in a huge range of crafts from ceramics, glass, and textiles to leatherwork and jewellery, with many one-off bespoke pieces. Each trip to the Glamorous Owl provides something new and different with something for everyone.

Many of the artists also focus on the North East of England and use Newcastle as their inspiration, so on your visit, you will be able to collect something totally unique to this region. On top of this, Clare, the owner of the Glamorous Owl, is a professional silversmith. Many of her own creations are available in the shop, but for an added experience you can join in with the regular jewellery workshops, which range from short one-day courses, perfect for you and a group of friends to learn something new and come away with something special, to a full twelve-week course where at the end you will be a fully qualified silversmith. Clare also offers bespoke wedding ring workshops, enabling couples to craft their own rings together before their special day.
