Named after the Japanese word for freshwater eel, Unagi is a street food kitchen that you’ll find opposite the lower markets in Altrincham. Fans of sushi will know that unagi the food is a mind-bendingly complex dish to prepare, but when it’s done correctly the results are astonishing. And so it is with Unagi the place to eat.

They’re based in a catering truck with socially-distanced outside seating from midday, or you can get their delights delivered to your door. As well as sushi, there’s a whole range of Pan-Asian cuisine on offer, including their wildly popular take on chicken katsu, made with their secret ingredient, Java curry sauce.

Unagi has earned a reputation across South Manchester as the go-to place for the very best sushi and Japanese food

Chef Macky prepares eye-catching, multi-coloured sushi platters for diners, showcasing all the classic options as well as a few original ideas you’ll struggle to find anywhere else. If you’re looking for something truly exceptional, go for the Mushu Special – an exquisite creation which combines prawn in light tempura batter, fresh avocado and cucumber, seared salmon, black tobiko (flying fish roe) and the perfect amount of teriyaki sauce.

Opening in early 2020, Unagi has earned a reputation across South Manchester as the go-to place for the very best sushi and Japanese food. Dishes are prepared fresh on-site, and they assure customers that “everything is made with great care and precision, meaning it takes a little longer than the average takeaway”. This is what makes Unagi such a one-of-a-kind – the food is of the same, or better quality as the most high-end restaurant and the staff won’t settle for anything less than the very best for their customers.

Unagi is already a vital part of the Altrincham food scene and it’s not hard to imagine them going on to great things in the future. Catch them now and be part of the birth of something very special.
