The Lake District Holocaust Project at Windermere Library
Sara Jaspan, Exhibitions EditorIn August 1945, over 300 child Holocaust survivors were brought from Prague to the Lake District in Cumbria in an attempt to offer some place of safety for them in the immediate aftermath of their experiences. The community welcomed the children in with open arms, and so began a very significant relationship between the area and the story of what happened to those in the Nazi concentration camps and ghettos.
The Lake District Holocaust Project (LDHP), situated in the Windermere Library in Ellerthwaite, exists to preserve this history for all through its exhibitions, education work, research and interviews.
