Until as recently as 2008, Florence Mine in Egremont was the only deep working mine in Western Europe – extracting red iron ore and haematite found in, amongst other things, make-up. Converted into an arts centre, this 19th-century building has been beautifully renovated and now offers a wide range of events and activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. From gigs to theatre shows, exhibitions to film screenings, Florence Arts Centre does a lot for the local area’s creative scene. If you’re nearby, do check it out – you can’t miss it as the old buildings are still the distinctive colour of red ore that was once mined there.
