If you’re not looking for Black Redstart Gallery, you’d almost definitely miss it. It blends into the surroundings, being located in a beautiful converted Georgian townhouse in what is actually, a very central location on Hilton St opposite the Feel Good Club and a minute away from Stephenson square.
Black Redstart Gallery first opened in January 2025 so it’s a newcomer onto the local art scene. Started by Edward Mezani, the gallery showcases contemporary art from both emerging and established talent. There is a busy programme of exhibitions, with a new display every month and additional events like workshops, meditation sessions and book launches.

The space itself, like many small galleries around Manchester, is an oasis of calm in the chaos of the city. The clean white walls, wooden floors and spotlights give it a professional feel. On our last visit, the display was accompanied by classical music giving it a luxurious, escapist ambiance.
Previous exhibitions include expressive paintings in paint and ink from Tamlan Saoudi, assemblages that teeter between bleakness and comedy by Daniel Pickles and intricate paper cut-outs charged with personal history from Jasmine Gardener.
Black Redstart Gallery may be hidden in plain sight, but it’s already an important part of the local art ecology, allowing artists to test out ideas and celebrate their work in a professional setting. If you’re nearby, it’s well worth taking a look around.
