Cinema in the North
Tom Grieve, Cinema EditorAt HOME this July, there’s a visit from American film director Whit Stillman who is in town alongside a 35mm print of his classic The Last Days of Disco — the film is one of the best of the 1990s, and we’ve seldom booked tickets so fast. That’s scheduled alongside a weighty retrospective of the films of art house titan Michael Haneke.
We’ve been appreciating the programming by Mondo Queero recently, and the film club is back in Whalley Range this month with a screening of sapphic spy satire D.E.B.S. There’s an increasing cult for this underseen 2004 comedy and it’s exciting to see more audiences exposed to it.
At Cultplex in Manchester there’s a mammoth 13-film survey of American cinema on the agenda. Featuring everything from Easy Rider to High School Musical this season of screenings offers a look at how the United States views itself and sells itself. While the cinema also has Star Nhà Ease, the UK’s only curated season celebrating Vietnamese film, scheduled to run at the same time.
Of course, we’ve also been eyeing up some outdoor cinema events, with Leeds’s Cinema on the Square the clear standout with a programme than manages to be adventurous and extremely fun. Tatton Park has the mainstream fare covered well too.
