Northern Ballet: Victoria at Leeds Grand Theatre
Kristy Stott, Theatre EditorVictoria is a stunning co-production between Northern Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada with the world première taking place at Leeds Grand Theatre. The production will then embark on a UK wide tour.
The opening of this regal ballet will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s most iconic monarchs. This new ballet will tell the incredible life story of Queen Victoria through the eyes of her youngest child and lifelong companion Beatrice.
Told beautifully through dance, Beatrice relives memories of her mother, Queen Victoria as she transcribes her intimate diaries. From the accession of the teenage princess Victoria, Beatrice uncovers her mother’s challenging relationship with her own mother; the truth about her passionate marriage to Prince Albert; and her ambiguous relationship with John Brown; as well as key events of her reign from the Opium Wars to the Great Exhibition.
This new ballet seeks to present the diverse, often conflicting faces of this emblematic monarch, and shows how an act of daughterly devotion became one of history’s most notorious revisions.
Choreographed by Cathy Marston, the creator of Northern Ballet’s acclaimed Jane Eyre, and with an original score by long-time Northern Ballet collaborator, Phillip Feeney – Victoria is a must-see ballet for 2019.
