Few television dramas have landed with the impact of It’s a Sin. When Russell T Davies’ acclaimed Channel 4 series aired in 2021, it introduced a new generation to the devastating realities of the HIV/AIDS crisis, while celebrating the friendships, communities and resilience that emerged in its shadow. Witty though heartbreaking, and always fiercely humane, it quickly became one of the defining dramas of our time.

Now the story heads to the stage, when contemporary dance company Rambert bring a major new adaptation to Aviva Studios next February – and we can’t wait.

Rambert has built a reputation for translating ambitious narratives into thrilling live experiences. Following the huge success of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, the company once again turns to a modern cultural phenomenon, transforming Davies’ story into a new dance-theatre work where movement, music and visual storytelling take centre stage.

The creative team alone suggests something special is in the making. Original series creator Russell T Davies serves as Executive Producer alongside Pet Shop Boys and Glyn Fussell, while Rambert Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer directs and choreographs. New script development comes from acclaimed dramaturg Kaite O’Reilly, with music by Grammy-nominated composer Roman GianArthur. Meanwhile, Luke Halls Studio – known for its work with artists including Adele, Dua Lipa and Pet Shop Boys – will provide the production’s cinematic visual world.

We understand this won’t be a straightforward stage version of the television series. Instead, Rambert will reimagine Davies’ story through movement, music and large-scale visuals. Contemporary dance, archive material and cinematic imagery are set to collide as the story unfolds across a decade shaped by joy, loss, activism and profound social change. Love, fear and defiance sit side-by-side as a generation fights for one another, in a world becoming increasingly hostile to their existence.

Premiering at Aviva Studios before embarking on a major UK and international tour, Manchester audiences will be the first to experience this ambitious new production. For fans of the original series, dance lovers and anyone interested in bold contemporary storytelling, It’s a Sin already looks set to be one of 2027’s most anticipated theatre events.
