Always double check opening hours with the venue before making a special visit.

Hamilton Vault Studios becomes a home for the weird and wonderful world of medieval marginalia with a contemporary twist. The mind-boggling illustrations and notations in medieval manuscripts become the inspiration for a group exhibition of new works.
If this doesn’t ring a bell just yet, we recommend a quick online search for some examples. Why did medieval monks, nuns and scholars painstakingly illuminate texts of key importance with fish on two legs, lizards with human heads and rabbits dressed like priests? In this Hieronymus Bosch-like world, we don’t have all the answers but they’re sure fun to look at and Hamilton Vault Studios is the perfect venue to experience all the weirdness up close.
The space is located in a former bank vault turned art space making for an unusual art display, hovering somewhere between prison-cell like and almost cosy. It’s a very active gallery too, with new displays popping up on a regular basis, becoming a key venue in Merseyside’s cultural fabric.
Medieval Marginalia gathers a wide range of local artists, with mostly wall-based works but one thing’s for sure – you can expect all things whimsical and bizarre.
Please note that the venue is not step-free accessible but a video tour will be available after the show opens.
