Hamilton Vault Studios becomes a home for the weird and wonderful world of medieval marginalia with a contemporary twist. The mind-boggling illustrations and notations in medieval manuscripts are the inspiration behind this group show of new works.

If the phrase ‘medieval marginalia’ doesn’t ring a bell just yet, we recommend a quick online search for some examples. Why did monks, nuns and scholars painstakingly illuminate important texts with fish on two legs, lizards with human heads and rabbits dressed like priests? We’ve no idea but it’s a great source of inspiration for new works of art and Hamilton Vault Studios is the perfect venue to experience all of this Hieronymus Bosch-like weirdness up close.

The space is located in a former bank vault turned art space making for an unusual art display, hovering somewhere between cell-like and cosy. It’s a very active gallery too, with new displays popping up on a regular basis, making it a key venue in Merseyside’s cultural fabric.

Medieval Marginalia gathers the work of local Merseyside artists and others from further afield, with mostly wall-based works. One thing’s for sure though – you can expect all things whimsical and bizarre, so pop in to take a look around and escape reality, just for a little while.

Please note that the venue is not step-free accessible but a video tour will be available after the show opens.
