Manchester’s Northern Quarter has long been the city’s hub for creativity, rebellion and individuality. This small-group walking tour explores the neighbourhood’s streets, stories and hidden corners, offering a closer look at the places and people that have made it one of the city’s most distinctive areas.

The tour begins with a stroll through the Northern Quarter’s cobbled streets, where bold murals and street art catch the eye at every turn. Your local guide will introduce the artists behind the work and reveal the history and techniques that have transformed these walls into an open-air gallery. Winter adds a particular charm, with low light glinting off the streets and the warm glow of cafés and music venues spilling onto the pavements.

Stevenson Square is a highlight, rich with stories of suffragettes, protests and everyday life. From here, the tour moves to the Daily Express Building, one of the city’s finest Art Deco landmarks. Oldham Street follows, with its mix of radical political history and music heritage, including the legendary Band on the Wall venue. Along the way, the tour visits Afflecks, Manchester’s independent market, where you can see the quirky, creative side of the city at its most concentrated.

The tour also uncovers a host of lesser-known gems, from hidden courtyards to local shops that have become institutions in their own right. Each stop offers a glimpse into the Northern Quarter’s enduring spirit of individuality and creativity, showing how history and culture continue to shape the area today.

Running for around 90 minutes, this walking tour is perfect for anyone keen to see Manchester beyond the familiar. It combines striking architecture, street art, local shopping and music history, with stories that will change the way you see one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

Every Friday and Saturday at 2pm.
