Liverpudlians rejoice – the city’s iconic Pier Head has been transformed into a winter wonderland for the third annual Liverpool Christmas Ice Festival.

Expect all manner of family-friendly fun, including an enormous outdoor ice rink which allows skaters of all experience levels the opportunity to zip and zoom around the ice. Both these attractions are suitable for a variety of ages, meaning you can race your family members to your heart’s content. Mini-skaters need not worry – there are plenty of penguin skate aids to keep you steady.

Another must-try is Liverpool’s biggest ever ice slide – 30 metres of high-octane action while you hurtle down from six metres above the festival site. And don’t forget to take a trip on the truly awesome Ice Jet Ride which gives festival-goers a light-speed trip set to a fantastic sound and light show.

The curried bratwurst is the perfect pick-me-up for these chilly months

All a bit too active? Don’t worry, for those who like to live at a more sedate pace there are plenty of pop-up food and drink stalls, featuring crepes, hot chocolate and mulled wine, and our personal favourite – the must-visit Sausage Swing Grill. Head here for a variety of the tastiest bratwurst this side of Europe – the delicious curried bratwurst is the perfect pick-me-up for these chilly months, a BBQ-style take on the German classic.

Alongside these, you’ll find plenty more funfair rides for both kids and big kids alike. You’ll need to book in advance for the ice rink and ice slide, but don’t worry the prices are pocket-friendly for such a superb day out, plus there’s the option of wristbands to check out the rides. There’s so much on offer you’ll no doubt leave planning a return visit – we certainly did.
