Indestructible at The Lowry
Kristy Stott, Theatre EditorOffering an unflinching exploration of the interplay between gender and power in contemporary arts, Indestructible is a fierce and funny show from award-winning theatre company, Proteus.
Razor sharp and highly visual, Indestructible uses animation and AI-generated projections to ask urgent questions around cancel culture, accountability and the money-drive commodification of art.
The show focuses on Catherine Shaw, who shocked the world with her provocative performance art throughout the ‘90s. Catherine has always called herself a feminist, but now, in light of the #MeToo movement, she’s questioning how much she enabled the culture she now sees being called out. When an ambitious curator approaches her regarding a new major exhibition of female artists, a scandal breaks out, and Catherine unwittingly finds herself at the centre of it.
This probing and brave performance in The Lowry Studio asks the audience: why is it still so difficult for female artists to succeed? And why are women so often expected to hold the moral space?
