Returning to the big screen 27 years on from it’s original release, music scene doc Hang the DJ is showing at Treehouse Manchester as part of a nationwide series of charity screenings in aid of drug, alcohol and mental health support charity, We Are With You, and Endometriosis UK.

The 1998 documentary was the brainchild of twin bothers Marco and Mauro La Villa, who stumbled across players within the nightclub scene while working late shifts at their uncle’s pizza joint in Montreal, Canada. Intrigued by the characters they encountered, the pair set about following underground DJs, including Roger Sanchez, Junior Vasquez, DJ Qbert and A-Trak as they earned notoriety.

Hang the DJ premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, and earned positive notices for illuminating the 90s dance scene as the La Villa brothers captured DJ sets from as far afield as Amsterdam, Liverpool, Tokyo, New York and Miami, mixing rave footage with DJ interviews and fan commentary.

The Manchester screening of the charity tour takes place at FLIX, an all new state of the art screening room inside Treehouse Hotel Manchester, which opened in 2025. The film, named for The Smiths’ song, will be presented from a new 4K scan of the original 35mm print and each ticket includes a complimentary welcome drink and popcorn.
