Let me be your fantasy… Writing the Magic (Essays on Crafting Fantasy Fiction) is the fourth in Liverpool-based publisher Dead Ink Books‘ award-winning series of guides to writing different genres, and this launch event – on the same day the book is published – hears from editor Dan Coxon and two contributors, RJ Barker and Alex Pheby.

Following on from Writing the Uncanny (Essays on Crafting Strange Fiction), Writing the Future (Essays on Crafting Science Fiction) and Writing the Murder (Essays on Crafting Crime Fiction), this time editors Dan Coxon and Richard V Hirst have tapped the best authors of fantasy fiction to share their experiences of writing the genre.

In the book, authors including Jeff Noon (Pollen and so on), Hannah Kaner (Godkiller, Sunbringer and Faithbreaker) and Jen Williams (from 2017’s The Ninth Rain to 2025’s The Sleepless) let us in on the secrets of how to write fantasy, delving into worldbuilding and the magic tricks to creating authenticity – everything you need to embark on your own writing adventure.

Dead Ink says: “From Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones, over the last hundred years few genres have captured the public imagination as powerfully as fantasy. Whether it’s epic quests of dwarves and elves, wizards and paladins, or the influential childhood classics of Alan Garner and CS Lewis, the appetite among readers for all things magical seems insatiable. Pulling together a fellowship [see what they did there?] of some of the best writers of modern fantasy fiction, Writing the Magic invites you to step through the portal and discover what gives these tales such enduring appeal.”

Other contributors are Charlotte Bond, Francesco Dimitri, Lucy Holland, Katherine Langrish, Juliet E McKenna, Kritika H Rao, Richard Strachan and JL Worrad.
