Witness the compelling UK debut from revered Korean choreographer Ae-soon Ahn at The Lowry this June. Following the success of the Festival of Korean Dance in 2023, the celebrated dance artist brings her latest and monumental work – Cheok – to Salford.

Pinpoint precision and stunning design meet in this sensuous exploration of human connection and the rediscovery of traditional Asian values. Through a rich and atmospheric fusion of light, video, sound and movement, six world-class dancers conjure a world where heritage and ancient systems illuminate the future. Expect delicate scenes, enticing ensemble work and virtuosic solos.

The dance piece is named after the Cheok, a traditional Asian unit of measurement meaning ‘span of the hand’. Resisting the uniform standardisation of society, this varied and individual measurement drives Ae-soon Ahn’s work; Cheok is an alluring reflection on the nature of precision, beautifully performed.

Eckhard Thiemann, Programming Associate of Dance at The Lowry told us, “This is the second year we are bringing the Festival of Korean Dance to The Lowry and we are proud to present one of Korea’s most senior choreographers Ae-soon Ahn in her signature work. Delicate, atmospheric and filled with shifting moods, Cheok brings you what makes Korean dance special: precision, exquisite design and a glimpse into a world where heritage and modernity are not contradictory.”
