The Lowry in Salford Quays is a striking arts centre that brings together theatre, visual art and creative studio spaces under one roof. Opened in 2000 and officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II later that year, it has become one of Greater Manchester’s most recognisable cultural landmarks, sitting proudly on the waterfront opposite MediaCityUK.
Named after L. S. Lowry, the celebrated artist who spent most of his life in Salford, the venue houses the world’s largest public collection of his work. Over 400 paintings and drawings capture the matchstick figures and industrial landscapes that made Lowry famous. The collection is accompanied by an extensive archive of letters, photographs and exhibition materials, offering a rare insight into his life and artistic process.
Beyond its galleries, The Lowry is a powerhouse of performance. Its two main theatres and studio space host an ambitious year-round programme, spanning West End productions, contemporary dance, innovative drama, stand-up comedy and family-friendly shows. The Lyric Theatre, the largest of the spaces, seats more than 1,700 people and has become a key stop on major UK tours, while the Quays Theatre and Studio provide a home for more experimental and intimate work.
The gallery spaces, known as the Andrew Law Galleries, are free to enter and often feature contemporary exhibitions from artists working across the North. Regular tours and talks invite visitors to learn more about Lowry’s life and the creative community that has grown around his legacy.
Within the building, visitors will find a café, restaurant, terrace bar and shop, all with views over the Quays. Families are well catered for, with activity packs and a dedicated creative space for children to explore and play. The Lowry remains a vibrant, welcoming destination for anyone who loves art, theatre and the energy of modern Salford.
