A festive drag queen lies sideways on a stage wearing a red santa hat, velvet santa jacket and red tutu. Raising one leg up towards the ceiling, wearing a glittery red high heel. Behind is two females dressed as donkeys.

Did someone say Christmas Cabaret? Unity Theatre is once again hosting their anything but ordinary, outright bonkers festive production, Unity Christmas Cabaret. Two nights of laughter, spectacle and basically chaos. Think puppets, punk, burlesque and high-camp drag, all colliding in an anarchic celebration of the season.

Now, if you haven’t guessed already, this is not a traditional Christmas show, there is no storyline or strict theme. It is a glorious evening of variety. Within this mixed bag of goodies, you can expect treats like Velma Von Bon Bon. Your head will be spinning with this acrobatic double act, strutting, twirling and balancing their way around the stage and into your hearts.

Bringing it back down to ground level but high on the comedy scale, Katy Anne Bellis and her cast of festive friends, spoiler alert, they’re puppets. And if you thought this show couldn’t get anymore delightfully weird, you thought wrong. Special guests Georgre Michael will be in attendance, in puppet form of course.

Is it really Christmas Cabaret without a beloved, or at least one well known, Christmas character? After touring schools as The Grinch, Amanda is replacing her child-friendly portrayal of this green present-snatcher with a more tongue in cheek version. ‘Ophelia Bits’ in How The Grinch F*cked Christmas, an alternative comedy burlesque, turning this famous tale on its head, literally.

So what’s the perfect antidote to a classic, conventional Christmas night out? An irreverent, glitter-soaked, fun filled one. Unity Christmas Cabaret, not your typical Christmas show, but why would you want it to be?
