Described as a ‘classy comedy thriller’ by The Stage, Spinach is an all-sung performance that opens with two strangers tethered to one another in the basement of a house. Expect thrills, abduction, pills, attraction, laughs, prescriptions and a few surprises along the way.

Imagine waking up and realising that you’ve been drugged. You’re tied to a stranger but neither of you knows how you got there and you have no idea how to escape.

An all-sung performance that opens with two strangers tethered to one another in the basement of a house…

Running at around 80 minutes long, the show centres around two young characters, Tom and Kate, who wake up together in a dark room without any recollection of how they got there. Seemingly unknown to one another, their memories are a complete blur – except for a halloumi kebab and a double-decker bus. As they begin to find out more about each other, flashes of memory return… and piece by piece they begin to unravel their memories. With every twist and turn in the tale, each clue brings them closer to knowing their captors…

Written and directed by Janine Waters and featuring music by Simon Waters, Spinach premiered at the Royal Exchange Theatre in 2011 before transferring to London’s King’s Head Theatre. It received rave reviews – praised for its “exceptionally funny writing” and “blunt Northern humour” (Ian Foster, Ought to Be Clowns).

With a hugely talented cast of four, Charlotte Linighan will make her first professional stage debut alongside Rachael McGuiness (Hullraisers, Channel 4), Joe Parker (The Baby, SKY) and Craig Whittaker, who was an original performer in the first production of the show 10 years ago.

Spinach is now set to play at The Edge 10 years after it was first performed in Manchester, which incidentally also marks 10 years since The Edge opened its doors. It’s a perfect 10 out of 10 from us – a double celebration of a superb venue and a thrilling show.
