Implicitly, becoming a parent involves giving up some aspects of your former childfree life and embracing the pace and daily cycles of your baby. A lot of people are led to believe that’s just how it is and how it has to be for the first 18 months of parenthood. However, this is not the case. We’re seeing a rise in cultural happenings that you can enjoy with your baby in spaces designed for new parents to be comfortable in. For those who would regularly spend their weekend evenings belly laughing in the Frog and Bucket or the Comedy Store you can now enjoy some of the must see comedians on the circuit in Mum’s the Word, a parent friendly comedy gig at the Edge Theatre in Chorlton.

Hosted by comedian Kate McCabe, these afternoons of laughter welcome acts who are used to being heckled by drunken stag and hen parties. These are well seasoned comedians who aren’t going to be put off by a crying baby and in some cases it won’t be the first time they’ve been exposed to bare breasts mid set.

Although Mum’s the Word is described as a gig for parents, anyone is welcome as long as they bring a baby. Grandparents, friends, aunties, uncles, nannies are all invited to this space for having a laugh alongside little ones. Audience members are welcome to feed, change and nurse babies at any point during the sets. It’s a super relaxed environment where people are encouraged to feel comfortable whilst being able to meet their baby’s needs.

It is important to note, comedians will be performing their regular adult material, so to save older siblings from learning words and phrases that will come back to haunt you, there’s an age limit of under 18 months on the little people you bring along.

Mum’s the Word takes place at The Edge. If you haven’t come across this hidden gem of a theatre in Chorlton yet it’s well worth checking out their full programme of theatre, workshops and events.

This season’s theatre is gloriously eclectic: from radical cabaret and reinvented classics to new musicals and boundary-pushing performance.

This month we recommend a season of Film noir, cult Australian movies and a huge celebration of DIY community cinema.
