Forgotten Origins: Block Printing Demonstration and Workshop at Science and Industry Museum, Castlefield 19 March 2022 Entrance is free — Book now

Award-winning textile artist Taslima Ahmad will be revealing the forgotten history of block printing. This often looked over craft made a geographical journey from its origins in China to the Mancunian mills. It was here that the technique underwent a drastic transformation as traditional craft collided with the powerful steam looms of the industrial revolution. Hosted by the Science and Industry Museum, this workshop will give you the chance to get up close and personal with the process.

After a demonstration you’ll have the chance to get hands on with the process, printing fabric using wooden blocks containing carvings of original designs. These blocks will be covered in dye before being transferred onto the material letting you see exactly how block printing works.

For those who can’t attend in person, the Museum will be live-streaming this event as well as making available to watch online after the live demonstration. Sign up to the live stream via the website to be sent a link on the day.
