Williamson Gallery is currently hosting They Think They Are Fallen Angels, an exhibition by sculptor Christine Kowal.

The artist presents a set of sculptural and relief pieces carved in wood. The central subject of the show is human’s place in nature, the complex ways in which we see our relationship with the natural world and its inhabitants. While we may not necessarily feel physiologically superior to animals, our search for unique traits and the sense of superiority in intelligence deepens the disconnection between that which is human and animal.

Kowal’s sculptures depict figures resembling ‘fallen angels’, which put people in the realm of deities and reveal our aspirations to be above all other living things. With their expressions hovering between disdain and melancholia, the sculptures are a very physical expression of human pride in our own species.
