Bus Stop Goths brings together fantasy and suburban subculture. A joyfully chaotic piece coming to The Warehouse in Holbeck this April. A production filled with existential questions, Teesside grit and heavily applied eyeliner.
Following sell out performances in 2024, Bus Stop Goths by ARC Stockton Associate Artist Audrey Cook, is back for an exclusive performance in Teesside before heading out on a national tour. The production has a way of making people feel seen. The familiar picture of teenagers lingering on street corners, feeling invisible while watching the world go by, are experiences we have all been a part of at some point or another. To see it unfold in such a strange and humorous way, might bring back memories you hadn’t realised shaped you.
Goths, emos, outsiders of all shapes and sizes, they don’t know who they are yet they protest it regardless
The play follows Sid and Viv, two celestial beings out of public sight in a grimy basement, watching the world and the people that inhabit it exist in their unique ways. There are young people, blissfully unaware of the trials and inevitable heartaches and pain that is sure to come their way, forming their own micro-communities. They attempt to carve out their identities and claim space in a world that has little to no tolerance for them. Goths, emos, outsiders of all shapes and sizes, they don’t know who they are yet they protest it regardless. The bus stop Sid and Viv gaze upon everyday becomes a stage, a calming constant and sometimes even their only lifeline.
Youth services are in decline and public space is increasingly contested, figuratively and literally. Bus Stop Goths homes in on the importance of these informal gathering points, as they provide a sense of belonging and community in an otherwise isolated existence.
The subculture in question turns out to be much more about friendship and survival.
You might even leave with a new found appreciation for those so called ‘lost years’.
I bet you never thought hanging around doing nothing as a teenager would subconsciously shape the person you become and the people you navigate towards, but it did. Bus Stop Goths holds this ethos throughout the chaos and quietly moving moments. You might even leave with a new found appreciation for those so called ‘lost years’.
