Ilkley Lido is one of the oldest outdoor public pools in Yorkshire. However, this leisure complex has far more to offer than just the most beautiful place for a cooling swim on a hot day. Their indoor pool is open all year round and the views from the tennis courts and bowling green are unparalleled.

The Lido and cafe are both Grade II listed buildings, and have maintained their original 1930s design. The architecture uses a unique type of timber framed vernacular style of construction which is unusual to find in a rural location. The intelligent yet elegant design of the pool makes it suitable for multiple uses, with shallower ornate sections for paddling and a drop off point for more competent swimmers. The pool first opened as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations for King George V. Some of the events included in the opening festivities included ‘ladies and gents graceful high dive’ as well as giving out prizes for ‘ladies’ neatest and smartest, modern bathing costume’.

Swimmers can now enjoy Ilkley Lido’s modern upgrades as well as its heritage. This rare outdoor swimming experience comes with a stunning view of the moors and is available for swimmers from May till September. For those who don’t want to get wet, the picnic area gives you all the benefit of the natural beauty, without the chilly waters. If you’re feeling peckish after a swim, the cafe serves up a range of hot and cold treats to satisfy those hunger pangs.

Inside, the pool stays open all year round and is where you can find more typical council pool activities such as swimming lessons. The tennis courts and bowling green can be booked through Bradford Council’s website and give you stunning views of the valley while you play.

You can also have birthday parties at Ilkley Lido, check the website for more details.
