Music in the North

Johnny James, Managing Editor

Gig season’s starting early this year, and we’re coming in heavy: 10 fresh shows across Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool, threading together noise, ritual, euphoria and release in all their messy, beautiful forms.

In Manchester, forward-thinking electronica meets one-off happenings: Overmono’s high-octane club odyssey at The Warehouse Project, Call Super and Objekt’s rare all-night telepathy at The White Hotel, and Bloom’s cross-arts celebration of Manchester’s ties to Japan.

The RNCM’s Inspirational Artists series spans everything from GRAMMY-winning string quartets to boundary-pushing soloists, while in Blackburn, Confessional Festival marks its 10th birthday by filling a church with bold bookings, grassroots spirit and sacred mischief.

Leeds leans into the strange and magnetic, with The New Eves’ pagan-folk ceremonies at Hyde Park Book Club, Poor Creature’s shape-shifting take on Irish folk at The Attic, and Dog Race’s twitchy, gothic propulsion at Oporto.

Liverpool shifts from heavy to hypnotic: M(h)aol weaponise dissonance and distortion at Future Yard, SPRINTS bring politicised alt-punk to The Jacaranda, and Modern Nature weave folk, free jazz and post-rock at Rough Trade.

Read about all this and more below.
