Manchester International Festival (MIF) is back for 2023, bigger and better than ever. But aside from those eye-catching big-budget events there’s plenty to do that won’t cost a penny, thanks to the organisers putting on plenty of free happenings and must-visit events all over the city.
MIF23 is your chance to try something new, and in these trying times it’s important that everyone can take part. The eyes of the world will be on Manchester during the first half of July, and that’s the perfect excuse to get out there and enjoy what our great city has to offer, courtesy of the most exciting creative minds of our generation.
Essential things to do at MIF23 that won’t break the bank (or even dent it)
There’ll be world-firsts brushing up alongside world-class art, which means exciting collaborations and thought-provoking activities, from revered artists such as Tino Sehgal, Risham Syed and Ryan Gander. Not forgetting those all-important free-to-enter spaces, such as the ever-popular Festival Square, which has moved to a brand-new riverside location this year.

Berlin’s Tino Sehgal new work for MIF23 is called This entry and celebrates the connections between different worlds. It is held at both the National Football Museum (from 29 June to 5 July) and the Whitworth (7 July to the 16th, excluding the 10th) this summer.

Celebrate the start of Manchester International Festival 2023 with Each Tiny Drop, from Lahore-based artist, Risham Syed. This is a joyful gathering on the banks of the River Medlock at Mayfield Park that seeks to highlight togetherness, cycles and connection, with ourselves, each other, water and nature.

You’ll find the beating heart of Manchester International Festival 2023 in an all-new riverside location this year, with Festival Square popping up on the banks of the River Irwell for the duration of MIF23. This is a brand-new outdoor space in Manchester, and the perfect location to catch up with friends, watch new acts and scoff down delights from one of the many hand-picked street food vendors.
