This October half-term families are invited to step into a world that’s positively exploding with colour and transformation as the critically acclaimed  The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show comes to The Carriageworks Theatre.

Hooray, the stage adaptation of the much loved and extremely well-illustrated literary classic that taught generations the importance of portion control is coming to Leeds. The original Very Hungry Caterpillar book, in simple terms, tells the story of the dietary mishaps of an insect. Fruit, sweets, chocolate cake, ice cream, salami, pickles – before a stomach ache inevitably brings him down to earth. Salvation arrives in the form of a single leaf, and that’s when the metamorphosis happens. Over 48 million copies later, this fabulous tale still manages to excite youngsters and their grownups.

In this show, naturally, the very peckish little caterpillar takes centre stage, but he’s also joined by the gentle characters from Brown Bear, Brown Bear, 10 Little Rubber Ducks and The Very Busy Spider, three more of Carle’s most treasured works. This production adapts each of these stories in a way that appeals to families.

The show itself is under an hour long, which is ideal for younger theatre-goers with limited concentration. It’s packed with music and puppetry, and, more importantly, genuine joy. And there’s an educational aspect too, so you can feel smug about your little one’s development while having loads of fun, too. Sounds perfect, right?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show at Carriageworks Theatre is recommended for ages 0-6, but if you’re older and secretly thrilled by a talking caterpillar, we promise not to judge. Grab your kids and pack some snacks (maybe skip the cake-and-salami combo…) and head to Carriageworks, Leeds this autumn for an unmissable, heartwarming family event.
