The final film of Grimm Up North’s season is David Cronenberg’s beautifully filthy remake of The Fly. Perfectly in keeping with the director’s preoccupations, this cautionary tale of scientific experimentation is given a gory update with Jeff Goldblum in the role of scientist Seth Brundle, who’s work in teleportation leads him to accidentally merge on a “molecular-genetic level” with a housefly that wanders into his machinery. Featuring incredibly unsettling effects work, the 1986 film is one of the greatest pieces of science fiction ever made, with a tragic arc that resonates and speaks to everything from the AIDs crisis to scientific God-complexes and domestic abuse.
