Chalk Line Theatre bring their award-winning show The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return to Liverpool’s Unity Theatre for one night only. Fresh from a sold-out Edinburgh Fringe run, this is a night of noughties bangers, cheap gin and youthful energy colliding with violence, austerity and survival.

Set in Luton, the play follows two best mates across one unforgettable night. They chase the highs of adolescence, lurching from laughter to confrontation, as the chaos of a house party spills into something darker. Against a backdrop of systemic neglect, their story becomes a tapestry of violence and joy, friendship and fear, told with biting wit and lyrical intensity.

Written by Sam Edmunds and co-directed with Vikesh Godhwani, the show stars Elan Butler, Nathaniel Christian and Leanne Henlon – their performances shifting seamlessly between warmth and volatility. Expect Chalk Line’s trademark blend of live sound, movement and stripped-back staging in a production that Lyn Gardner for The Stage described as “Steven Berkoff’s East crossed with a grimy, anti-lyrical Under Milkwood.” Winner of Best New Writing at Fest and Skinny Magazine’s 2024 awards, The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return also earned critical acclaim from The Guardian and What’s On Stage, who hailed it as “exhilarating,” “boisterous” and a “masterclass in storytelling.”

Chalk Line Theatre have firmly established themselves as one of the UK’s most exciting young companies, making urgent work that speaks directly to a generation. Here, they turn their lens on youth, class and identity, exploring how joy, danger and possibility can collide in the space of a single night.

Bold, breathless and blisteringly relevant, The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return is both a party and a reckoning. Theatre that wakes you up as much as it entertains.
