Caridad Amaran and Georgina Wong learned the art of Cantonese opera in Havana during WWII and toured Cuba to perform. In the eighties, the two sisters are trying to perform Cantonese opera in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Will they find a stage?

Havana Divas makes an important contribution to a growing body of films documenting female artists and performers within the Chinese diaspora by bringing Cuba into view as an important multicultural crucible for these amazing women’s creative commitment to Cantonese opera.

This screening will be introduced by Felicia Chan, Senior Lecturer in Screen Studies at the University of Manchester.
