Kinofilm present a special screening of documentary The Nine Lives of Barbara Dane as part of Soul on Sunday an all-day event featuring a whole load of Northern Soul at the Nia Centre in the heart of Hulme.

Directed by American documentary filmmaker Maureen Gosling, the 2023 documentary tells the storied, underground history of a powerhouse blues/folk/jazz singer. Taking an fascinating, alternate route through some of the biggest social and musical movements of the 20th century, the film explores Barbara Dane’s career as a singer and record producer alongside her life as a social justice activist and agitator that earned her an FBI file.

Featuring the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Jane Fonda and Louis Armstrong, this is a story of a fierce artist who, in her own words, walked a tightrope between making a living and keeping hold of her soul. The Nia Centre has been used as a theatre, cinema, BBC recording studio and more, but now operates a community arts space since 2018, making it the perfect spot from which to channel the spirit of Barbara Dane.

The film is accompanied by a massive six hours of dancing with Northern Soul, 60s classics, Motown and rare tunes spun by local DJ’s including Ollie Lambert, Debbie Bonnell, John Kino, Maxine Bellini and Bella plus special guest, Walkden Legion of Soul’s DJ Sue Tydd.
