You may also know him through his brother and fellow painter Stanley Spencer but Gilbert’s career spanned six decades and resulted in a sizeable body of work, from illustrations, preparatory studies to paintings and murals. He taught students at the Royal College of Art, Camberwell College and Glasgow School of Art. Today. His main area of interest was landscape and rural life, which he often recorded directly from life, painting outside.
