Manchester Craft and Design Centre is one of the cornerstones of the Northern Quarter. Their iconic premises, in a repurposed fish market, gives the resident artists space to make and sell their work which is unlike any other in the city centre. As well as exploring the makers work as a shopper, in lots of cases you can see into their studios, giving you a rare glimpse of each creative’s process. However, if you want to take things a step further and really understand the craft you can join individual artists for craft workshops, where you’ll learn directly from them.

In the workshops residents of the MCDC will guide participants through their methods letting you create your very own item to take away at the end of the session. The beauty of this situation is that it leans into the breadth of skills and interests represented in the artists at the centre. You can craft stunning silver jewellery, weave glass, build ceramics or learn the delicate intricacies of watercolour to name but a few.

During the sessions all materials are provided and you’ll be taken through each process in easy to follow steps with an expert maker on hand to help you create something beautiful. Whether it be natural dying or fashion illustrating that you’re turning your hand to, you can be sure to have an enjoyable creative time being supported to make something of real quality.

Workshops take place in studio two, an open and calming room which fills with natural light from the open foyer – on days when there is natural light to be found amongst Manchester’s familiarly comforting grey skies. The centre also has a small cafe which serves hot and cold drinks as well as simple but delicious bites to eat. A visit to the cafe is the perfect way to end a session of hard crafting.

Check the Manchester Craft and Design Centre’s website for more information including dates, times and pricing. Each workshop is a one off experience so although they happen regularly, it’s best to check for specific details of each one.
