This traditional pub, named after a Victorian hero who saved more than fifty souls from drowning in the then-fetid waters of the River Irwell, combines a picturesque riverside location with a cracking menu devised by celebrated local chef Robert Owen Brown. The pub was taken over by Brown in 2009; since then its muscular modern British regional cooking is on top form; it even won the praise of notoriously picky Guardian food critic, Jay Raynor. In line with its locally-sourced menu, the drinks selection features local breweries, with dining or simply drinking available on the riverside terrace. It’s as close as Manchester’s ever likely to get to Venice.
