Have you been to Stockport recently? If the answer is no, perhaps a day trip is in order. With a growing number of cultural spaces livening up the town centre, Stockport’s finally showcasing its identity, community and creativity.

Stockroom is the latest addition to the local cultural scene. A brand new creative space, Stockroom has a little bit of everything: a town centre library, a children’s creative learning space, a café and Stockport’s historical archives. There is a busy programme of one-off events, many of which are free to attend too. Exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, yoga, toddler sessions, banquets, music nights – you name it, it’s probably coming up at Stockroom.

There are facilities for young people too, to develop new skills and use cutting-edge learning and IT equipment. If  you’re after a quiet spot to work, do a little bit of research or homework (it’s open late a few days a week), this might just be it.

The space is part of Stockport’s transformation – an ambitious £14.5 million cultural and creative centre that responds to the needs of local communities and puts the town on the cultural map of the North.

Stockroom has taken over previously disused retail units which means it’s in a perfectly central location and brings in a little bit of cheer to the Merseyway Shopping Centre.

The events programme is varied and shaped by collaborations with local creatives as well as major international arts organisations, remaining ambitious while listening to what’s actually wanted and needed from the audience on its doorstep.

The key aim of Stockroom is to be a welcoming space for everybody. This means, you don’t need to buy a £6 slice of cake just to take a seat. Browse the library, relax, or get involved in one of the many events – the space is yours to use, however you choose.
