Woodhouse is a Leeds suburb with an undercurrent of cultural excellence bubbling just beneath the surface. It’s an area where artists of all musical genres, styles and practices have lived, rehearsed and honed their craft for decades. Heritage specialists Joe Williams and Matthew Bellwood are bringing this culture into the spotlight with free walking tours. They’ll be sharing what their explorations into the richly diverse musical tapestry of the area has unearthed.

The music walks are part of a wider project called Past and Present. Based in Woodhouse’s musical heart, Music House, Past and Present is a project that documents the breadth and variety of musicians and musical influences in the area, sharing a communal passion and encouraging people to understand the cultural tapestry of the place. It examines the history behind how certain styles came to be there as well as how they’ve helped shape the culture of the area today. On the walk you’ll hear stories of significant people and how their musical lives impacted the neighbourhood.

These free walks start at 10:30am at music house and with a briefing and refreshments. You’ll then set off as a group at 11am with the walk lasting around 90 minutes. The walking is gently paced and uses footpaths and pavements that are level and accessible. Afterwards walkers are welcome back to Music House for further refreshments.

If you do have any access concerns feel free to contact Music House before attending. Walkers are encouraged to sign up via the form on the ‘book now’ link, however, you are also welcome to just turn up on the day.

Music House is a place where everyone is welcome to accessible music learning, ensemble playing and performing as well as. They help people develop musical skills and provide performance opportunities as part of their showcases at Leeds Playhouse.
