Tate Liverpool for Liverpool Biennial 2016
Polly Checkland HardingVisit Tate Liverpool during the Liverpool Biennial and you’ll find a floor of the gallery transformed into Ancient Greece, with a mix of old and new; the exhibition is preoccupied with the ‘accidental hermaphrodites’ that sometimes resulted from none-too-sensitive restoration of Greek statues in the 1800s, where parts from male statues were used on female, and vice versa.
Classical sculptures are interspersed with newly commissioned artworks including a domestic mural by Betty Woodman, complete with 3D ceramic objects.
