Farsley is fast becoming an enclave of exciting happenings on the outskirts of Leeds. We see this in the new businesses arriving, the transformation of the highstreet and the ability for places like SCRAP to thrive. SCRAP describes itself as a creative centre for reuse. It sees the value in things and materials, keeping them and selling them on to people who can make use of them where they might otherwise go to waste. This Autumn they’re throwing open their ethos of anti waste towards the people of the suburb and hosting a secondhand yard sale in the SCRAP Community Junk Market.

Previous junk markets have been populated with clothing, baby paraphernalia, homeware, crafting materials, bric a brac, junk (treasure), fabrics, paper crafts, stamps, glitters, books, boardgames, toys, shoes, lampshades, picture frames, woodworking tools and original framed artwork. Imagine a carboot sale where all the sellers have crafty hobbies and pretty excellent taste and that gives you an idea of the calibre of gems you can find among the tables.

Material goods are useful to different people at different times. So rather than everyone buying new things as and when their needs arise, by contributing to a communal exchange of things you’re supporting the people around you and cutting big time capitalists out of the cycle of commerce. What’s not to like!

Entry is free, children and dogs are very welcome and the onsite micro cafe will be serving up refreshments in the form of hot drinks and cake throughout. Stall holders can book a space for just a £20 fee, with the one condition that everything is secondhand, recycled or reused in line with SCRAP’s entire ethos.

Check out the SCRAP website for future events of recycled joy and sewing socials.
