There’s something quite beautiful – maybe even radical – about turning your living room into a gallery and inviting strangers in to see it. For one weekend each May, that’s exactly what happens on Green Walk in Whalley Range.

Artists exhbit their work in the open houses at green walk
Jess Foggett.

Now in its 17th edition, Green Walk Open House Arts & Crafts is a pop-up arts trail that sees local residents hand over their homes to nearly 50 artists and makers, transforming kitchens, hallways and spare rooms into intimate gallery spaces. You’re not peering at work across a white cube; you’re standing a few feet away, often with the person who made it, talking through process, materials, ideas.

As you move from house to house, the breadth of the local scene comes into view. Ceramics sit alongside textiles, jewellery alongside photography, painting alongside glass. It’s a reminder of just how much making happens at a local level – and how rarely we get to experience it like this, in a domestic setting.

At the centre of the trail, the green becomes a social hub where people pause for tea and homemade cake or something more substantial from Tibetan Kitchen, Wrapscalion, or Gingers Comfort Emporium, before heading back out along the trail. It’s unhurried, friendly, and unmistakably rooted in the place that hosts it.

Lots of events talk about community. This one properly means it. If you’re after a wholesome bank holiday afternoon activity, this is about as good as it gets.

A busy image created using generative AI. The image depicts a man at the centre with grey hair and rosy cheeks, surrounding him are fairies that appear to be created in his own image with multiple limbs and unique bodily proportions. Around them are hundreds of vials, microscopes and dated scientific equipment.
